This collection of worldwide tracks shows Fela Kuti’s influence had global reach even at the dawn of Afrobeat.
“Let me tonight into your house because I’m going to become a music!’” growls the lead singer on Cumbia Moderna De Soledad’s hand drum driven opening cut of ‘Shacalao (Shakara)’ on this incredibly eclectic and electrifying album of Fela Anikulapo Kuti cuts. Researched, compiled, annotated and produced by Stones Throw don, Egon, this beautifully packaged collection (it’s like a small book!) takes us on a journey that traces the global reach of Fela’s influence, embracing Nigeria, Colombia, Trinidad and New York City. On the Nigerian front we have an opportunity to decipher who influenced who between the mighty Fela and his contemporaries Dan Satch And His Atomic 8 Dance Band and organist/sophisti-cat Segun Bucknor. Comedian/trumpeter Bola Johnson’s ‘Never Trust A Woman’ is a seriously stripped back affair while his ‘Hot Pants’ is JB meets Chop & Quench. Considering Fela’s fraught relationship with the Nigerian military, the 6th Infantry Brigade of the Nigerian Army’s ‘Black & Proud’ is a total shock! Ghana is in the mix via the Rambler’s Jerry Hansen and then after touching down on Colombian accordionist Lizandro Meza’s alternative cut of ‘Shacalao’ we jet into Trinidad and encounter the incredible Lever Brothers. Check the band shot of the Sylvania East Side Symphony and read the notes illuminating the recording of ‘Black Man’s Cry’ by the Mosco Tiles Fonclaire Steel Orchestra. Leaving behind Caribbean pan-culture we arrive in more contemporary times with analogue Afrobeat-inspired gems from NYC’s Daktaris and Munich’s The Whitefield Brothers. A crate digger’s delight, Black Man’s Cry simply rocks!
